The News-Herald is ready to honor past greats among area high school sports circles.
And boy, there are plenty of them.
Beginning in 2013, The News-Herald is creating a high school sports hall of fame, which will be maintained through a website, http://www.NHVarsityHallofFame.wordpress.com.
The first class, and others to follow, will be announced during the Senior Bowl, The News-Herald’s all-star football game. The date for the 2013 Senior Bowl has yet to be announced.
The N-H high school sports hall of fame will consist of up to 10 inductees for each class. Eligible to be inducted are players, coaches, teams, administrators (i.e. athletic directors) and individuals who have had a great influence on area high school sports.
The News-Herald sports department is in the process of creating a selection committee, which will be announced at a later date. The public is encouraged to make nominations, but the selection of each hall class will be decided upon by the selection committee.
A few ground rules for inductees:
• Players or teams must have graduated at least 10 years prior to induction.
• Coaches and administrators must have spent at least 10 years at an area school or schools.
• Accomplishments by players, coaches, etc., must have occurred during a time when The News-Herald covered such school.
n Including excellence on the field, inductees are expected to have shown excellence off the field during their playing or coaching days and beyond.
Initial plans are to induct one per sport in each class. The News-Herald currently covers 21 area high school sports.
